You know that crispy, outer layer you enjoy when you buy chicken from Chicken Republic or KFC? It’s all thanks to deep fryers.
They’re majorly of two types: the Industrial kind (used by eateries and hotels) and the ones for home use. We’re focusing on the later in this post. You could make the following meals with them: french fries (which we call “chips” in Nigeria), onion rings, chicken, fish, potatoes, and more!
• Why use a deep fryer?
1. The frying process will be a whole lot faster.
2. Your food will be uniformly cooked. And you don’t need to turn the food over and over to ensure all sides are cooked.
3. Your cooking area will be neater. Oil isn’t spluttering around. And you don’t have to dock!
4. You’ll use less oil. So it helps control your oil and sodium intake.
5. They have replaceable oil filters, which keep your oil clean and suitable for reuse.
6. There’s a reduced chance of overcooking your food since they’re equipped with thermostats that allow you to control the cooking temperature.
7. And, your home doesn’t smell like the food you’re cooking since deep fryers are also equipped with odor filters.
• Staying Safe with Deep Fryers:
1. Read the instruction manual of your particular deep fryer and follow the directions for installation and use. This is extremely important. You shouldn’t assume the new one works just like the old one.
2. Never overdo the oil.
Avoid filling more than half of the container, as the oil may spill and lead to accidents. Use the level indicator inside the deep fryer as a guide. Your meal will still be properly cooked.
3. Pour the oil only when the deep fryer is turned OFF and COOL. If you’ve turned it on before remembering the oil, please put it off, then fill it with oil.
4. Keep the lid closed when heating your oil.
5. To reduce the risk of accidents, place your deep fryer away from inflammable objects. This goes for every other electrical appliance in your kitchen.
6. Ensure that the power cord is out of the way and not prone to spluttering oil from the deep fryer. Cords shouldn’t trip people. And the oil shouldn’t get on the cords or wires either.
7. Do not directly transfer food from the fridge or freezer into the basket of your deep fryer. Pat it dry to remove any moisture and prevent the oil from spluttering. This “spluttering” simply means that the oil starts jumping, landing on you and things around. We don’t want that.
8. Avoid crowding the basket of your deep fryer. Fry the food in batches if needed. It’ll get your food uniformly cooked, and you get to avoid the accidents due to oil spillage.
9. Gently lower the basket into the oil. Sudden and quick immersion can make the oil spill or splutter.
10. Never leave a deep fryer unattended when it is in use. The oil can get too hot, start smoking, and even go up in flames. So, MONITOR it constantly.
11. When your food has been cooked, lift the basket gently and shake it well to get rid of the excess oil.
12. Wait till the oil properly cools down to drain the inner pot and clean the deep fryer. Keep the lid on while it cools. And, keep it out of children’s reach. Hot oil is dangerous and can cause accidents.
